Faculty of Literature

The Faculty Literature consists of four departments: Psychology, Information Sociology, Intercultural Studies and Social Welfare.

The Department of Psychology offers to students well-balanced studies covering the wide field of psychology between experimental and practical, and assists them in becoming specialists of the mind.

The newly designed Department of Information Sociology offers a wide range of studies of social phenomena in our contemporary society (urban problems, education, mass media, social planning etc.), stressing an acquaintance with methodology and skills of social investigation and information processing.

Such major elective subjects as Linguistics, Crosscultural Communication, Cultures of the East, Cultures of the West, Comparative Studies of Culture, and History of Cultural Exchange, are the most characteristic of the Department of Intercultural Studies. Since it is indispensable for students to know their own country and local areas well to become truly internationally-minded, Japanese Culture and the Culture of Kyushu are also offered as electives. In this Department, students in their third year can choose their major field of study from five courses of study: Japanese Culture, East- Asian Culture, English and Anglo-American Culture, European Culture, and History.

The Department of Social Welfare provides education that will help students to become professionals in the field of social welfare who have not only a knowledge of social welfare but also a practical ability in social welfare which is flexible and applicable to a variety of needs.

In order to achieve this aim, the Department starts with the basics including classes such as Introduction to Social Welfare and History of Social Welfare. Coursework then proceeds to administrative methodology with classes in Casework and Groupwork, diversifying into specialized field classes of Children's Welfare and Welfare of the Aged. The program then proceeds to Seminars and Practicums to develop the practical ability of the students.
